A collaborative course through which people with diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify their behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions. The course incorporates the needs, goals, and life experiences of the person with diabetes and is guided by evidence-based standards. DSME can be conducted on an individual and/or group basis, and is facilitated by a licensed health professional. The course covers topics such as: - Diabetes disease process & treatment options - Incorporating nutrition management, physical activity & utilizing medications - Monitoring blood glucose & using results to improve control - Preventing, detecting & treating acute & chronic complications - Goal setting and problem solving - Integrating psychosocial adjustment - Preconception care and management during pregnancy (if applicable)

Also teaches how to manage fatigue, sleep problems, difficult emotions, weight loss, and inter-family communication between friends and coworkers.

Counseling specialities include post-traumatic stress disorder, readjustment counseling, bereavement counseling, alcohol and drug counseling, sexual trauma counseling, marriage and family counseling.
